Accenture PED Safety Bag – UL 5800 Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Protection
A new generation of lithium-ion battery fire containment for aviation
Lithium-ion batteries are now part of everyday aviation. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, power banks and other portable electronic devices are commonly carried and used on board aircraft.
But when a lithium-ion battery enters thermal runaway, the situation can escalate rapidly. Fire, smoke, heat, gases and battery debris can create a serious safety hazard.
Accenture PED Safety Bag – a dual-layer containment solution developed for lithium-ion battery incidents.

What Is the Accenture PED Safety Bag?
The Accenture PED Safety Bag is a purpose-built containment system designed for portable electronic devices containing lithium-ion batteries.
The system was co-developed by Brimstone Fire Protection and Accenture and is manufactured in the USA.
Its dual-layer construction is designed to help contain the consequences of a lithium-ion battery thermal runaway event, including flames, smoke, heat, gases and battery debris.
UL Standard 5800 – Performance Level 1
One of the most important features of the Accenture PED Safety Bag is its UL Standard 5800 qualification.
The product range includes both Class 2 and Class 3 configurations, covering different battery capacities.
- Class 2 – up to 100 Wh
Performance Level 1 – Total Containment
- Class 3 – up to 160 Wh
Performance Level 1 – Total Containment
Brimstone states that its UL 5800 Class 2 and Class 3 systems achieved 100% containment of smoke, fire and debris during the corresponding thermal runaway tests.
The containment bag is designed for rapid deployment in an emergency.
How Does the Dual-Layer System Work?
The Accenture PED Safety Bag uses a dual-layer containment design.
The inner containment layer is designed to deal with the fire and physical effects of a thermal runaway event, while the outer layer helps contain smoke and harmful gases.
This approach is particularly relevant in aircraft, where smoke and toxic gases can be just as serious a concern as the flames themselves.

Why Is This Important in Aviation?
Portable electronic devices are now an integral part of modern air travel. Passengers and crew regularly carry phones, tablets, laptops, power banks, cameras and other battery-powered equipment.
A lithium-ion battery experiencing thermal runaway can produce intense heat, flames, smoke and potentially hazardous gases. On board an aircraft, there is limited space and no opportunity to simply move the incident outside.
Having dedicated containment equipment readily available can provide an additional layer of protection when dealing with a lithium-ion battery emergency.
Class 2 or Class 3 – Which One Do You Need?
The two versions are designed for different battery capacities:
| Version |
Battery Capacity |
Typical Applications |
| Class 2 |
Up to 100 Wh |
Phones, tablets, power banks and laptops up to approximately 13" |
| Class 3 |
Up to 160 Wh |
Larger laptops, power banks, professional equipment and power-tool batteries |
Always check the battery capacity of the device before selecting the appropriate containment solution.
FAA Testing – How Does It Compare?
Independent testing is particularly important when evaluating lithium-ion battery containment systems.
During an International Aircraft Materials & Systems Forum presentation in 2024, the FAA presented results from testing several containment products for portable electronic devices.
Brimstone states that its systems, represented as Manufacturer B, were the only products in that test to demonstrate 100% containment of smoke, flame and debris. The company notes that the FAA tests used earlier prototypes and that subsequent improvements were made before the formal UL testing.
Tested for Extreme Conditions
According to Brimstone's published technical information, the Accenture PED Safety Bag is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 2192°F / 1200°C.
During active containment testing, Brimstone reports that the exterior surface temperature did not exceed 183°F / 84°C.
The UL 5800 Class 2 and Class 3 systems are listed under UL 5800 File #R41211.
